PRO-Parenting Research Project

Picture
What is the PRO-Parenting Project?
PRO-Parenting is a new program at Loma Linda University, in collaboration with the University of Oregon, that offers FREE behavioral parent training (BPT) to parents of children with developmental delays. BPT is an empirically supported and commonly used intervention that has been shown to increase prosocial and adaptive behaviors in children while also decreasing negative child behaviors (such as noncompliance). BPT teaches parents how to best deal with their child’s problem behaviors and gives them the tools to be a more effective parent. The intervention will also include either a mindfulness or education component that we believe may help to further reduce parenting stress and in turn, lead to both immediate and long-term positive effects on child behavioral outcomes.

Why should I get involved?
As participants in our study, you will hopefully benefit from the supplemented BPT intervention. BPT has decades of published research, which indicates positive outcomes for families as child behaviors improve. By teaching parents useful parenting skills, the intervention aims to improve long-term child outcomes. In this study, we are also interested in supporting parents’ own well being. We believe the addition of the mindfulness or education component to the BPT intervention will help parents feel better and be better able to use the parenting skills they learn in the BPT program. Parents of children with developmental delays often experience heightened parenting stress, compared to parents of typically developing children. High levels of parenting stress have also been associated with negative outcomes for children over time. Therefore, the goal of the project is to promote parent well being in an effort to optimize the efficacy of BPT intervention in reducing your child’s behavior problems.

What is involved?
The program includes a total of 16 sessions, which include 6 weekly sessions of either the mindfulness or education component followed by 10 weekly behavioral parent training sessions. All 16 sessions will be held virtually via Zoom. Because this is a research study, there will also be some assessments (4 at home and 1 in the lab) to evaluate the effectiveness of our program over time. To ensure the health and safety of our participants, our home assessments will be contactless and will be conducted by our team, complying with all COVID-19 health and safety protocols. One or both parents are welcome to participate in the intervention.

BPT is an empirically supported intervention that can be beneficial to all parents. If you choose to enroll in the program, we hope that you can attend all of our virtual sessions in order to maximize the benefit of the intervention. This is an opportunity for you to receive some valuable training, possibly reduce stress, and catch a few minutes for yourself. Once you see the benefits you’ll be glad you joined!
